Hot off the Press

Scenting the trail for 2012...

The Fragrance Foundation UK recently hosted their first 2012 members’ breakfast event – Hot Off The Press: Focus on Fragrance - in The Screening Room at The Soho Hotel in London.

As guests arrived they were welcomed by the Foundation’s Executive Director, Linda Key, and the PR Team.

Following a light breakfast buffet, guests were ushered through to the auditorium where there were presented with the latest research into the beauty market for 2011 from June Jensen, Director for The NPD Group Beauty UK. This was followed by Mike Ramseyer, Mymarketmonitor’s CEO, who provided an informative update on the year on year changes for the fragrance industry in relation to the key marketing platforms of offline print.

Therefore, showing that the fragrance industry had a double-digit growth of +11% in 2011, this indicates that the fragrance trend should continue during 2012.

All attendees received a full presentation pack from both NPD and Mymarketmonitor.

An Evening with Jo Malone
Hosted by Nadine Baggott

The Fragrance Foundation UK Associate Committee recently organised the last in this year’s series of ‘An Evening With….Jo Malone’ – a special event restricted to members only.

Without an empty seat to be seen in The Soho Hotel’s private screening room, a rapturous applause broke out when Jo Malone was welcomed onto the stage to join one of the UK’s leading health and beauty writers, Nadine Baggot.

Initially, Jo worked as a florist and from here started to create her own scents and products. It was when she met her husband at the age of 19, when the business took off.

In 1994, the first Jo Malone London store was opened on 154 Walton Street. Five years on, an excited Jo launched the Jo Malone flagship store on London’s Sloane Street. This was the beginning for a brand, recognised for its cream and black packaging, that is still hugely successful, worldwide.

In 2006, Jo sold the company’s entirety to the Estee Lauder Companies as she believed it was a good time to make this decision and wanted to be in a position to fulfill many of her dreams and passions.

“All through my life I have chosen to do things differently”, claimed Jo. “Two years ago I didn’t know what I was going to do but didn’t ever think I would come back. However, I decided to get back into the water to start something new and different. It did take six to eight months to get back in the swing of things, especially using the ‘nose’, so Perfumers were the biggest help to me. Working with them is a like a puzzle and we all fit together and work well together.

“Furthermore, the power of ‘word of mouth’ is unbelievable. With today’s digital technology it’s not just pushing a button, but setting a precedent with people’s trust in you and the brand. ‘Jo Loves’ is all about the things Jo loves, whereas ‘Jo Malone’ was created for others. This project is completely done in a new way.”

Jo Loves launches November 2012 and each fragrance is defined by the exceptional personality of its wearer. Here are Jo’s interpretations of the four new scents:

  • ‘Pomello’ – beautiful, clean, fresh and easy to drench yourself in it.
  • ‘Green Orange & Coriander’ - soulful and sassy – a snowy day walking in New York City and sipping on a hot drink outside a cafe. It’s sexy and soulful and gives you a ‘feel good factor’.
  •  Orange Tulle’ – like a ballerina’s shoes – fun and flirty that keeps coming and going. It’s a girl’s lunch fragrance and gives you the right to be fun and flirty.
  •  ‘Gardenia’ – rich and regal. It’s ageless and has a classic time to it with a woody dry-down base.

Did you know?

    • Jo Malone created a lemon fragrance for the scented hand wipes in McDonald's
    • Jo Malone takes her own white linen sheets with her on holiday and likes them changed and starched every two days.
    • Jo Malone has a dictaphone and notepad beside her bed.
    • In 1999, Jo sold her beauty business to Estée Lauder Companies and remained Creative Director until her departure in 2006

    An Evening with Per Neuman
    Hosted by Hannah Betts

The Fragrance Foundation held another sellout evening with over 90 people in attendance at the Soho Hotel London on Wednesday 22nd June.
Per Neuman Managing Director, Estee Lauder Companies, was the next Industry guest in the series of ‘an evening with’ hosted by Hannah Betts, freelance Journalist and contributor to the Daily Telegraph and The Times.
A reception was held in the swirl room followed by a relaxed interview in the screening room with an opportunity for the audience to participate in a questions and answers session.
Per shared memories of growing up in Sweden where at the age of 27 he joined the cosmetics industry and clearly it continues to be his passion to this day. He loves its pace, its competitiveness, its innovation and its brands; all of which make being part of the industry so exciting. Per’s long and successful career with the Estee Lauder Companies has taken him to Australia, to the USA where as Executive Vice President for the Company’s International Division the Regional Directors and International Operations reported to him, and in 1988 it brought him here to the UK. Under his tenure as Managing Director the UK affiliate has multiplied in size and achievement many times over. On retirement he told us he has many things he wants to do but what will he miss the most? The people of course!

    AN EVENING WITH JEREMY SEIGAL
    Hosted by Alice Hart-Davis

The Fragrance Foundation’s Associate Committee organised a sellout evening with over 70 people in attendance at Kettners, London on Tuesday 15th March.

Jeremy Seigal CEO of AS Watsons UK was the next Industry guest in the series of ‘an evening with’ hosted by award winning beauty journalist Alice Hart Davis. Jeremy shared his experiences on how it all began from the founding The Perfume Shop in 1992 with his then business partner Philip Newton. This innovative retail format made fragrance an accessible purchase for consumers and removed the intimidation inherent in traditional perfume buying. This revolutionised fragrance retailing and propelled The Perfume Shop to become the largest and most successful specialist fragrance retailer in the UK.

Jeremy went on to talk about where he sees the fragrance industry today and in the future, in particular Jeremy stated the importance of innovation when taking over of brands by the big corporates and not just letting them blend into the same strategy of current brands already in their portfolio.

He also told the audience that it hadn’t always been easy and sometimes without strategy how he had challenged the conventions of the fragrance industry.

He thanked the team at both The Perfume Shop and Superdrug many who have been with him since the beginning.

The Perfume Shop, under Jeremy’s direction, has turned into one of the most successful retail businesses on the British high street today. So much so, that it has now become a key part of the global AS Watson Group. Which also owns Superdrug and Savers.

    An Evening With: Francis Kurkdjian
    Monday, 27th September 2010

Members of the Fragrance Foundation and their guests were treated to a truly insightful evening in the company of Francis Kurkdjian, one of the world’s most successful and celebrated perfumers. The evening was hosted by award winning journalist and entrepreneur Josephine Fairley who probed the deepest recesses of Francis’ creative mind and the inspiration behind some of his masterful creations.

Amongst the many topics discussed, Francis described his first and possibly most important fragrance brief as a perfumer – Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Male, which was given to him simply as a training exercise. No one expected (not least Francis himself) that his work would win the brief and would go on to be one of the most successful fragrances of the 90’s. Francis went on to describe his views on today’s fragrance industry, key trends in perfumery, his main areas of drive and inspirations and most importantly, his own brand ‘ Maison Francis Kurkdjian’ which he successfully launched in September 2009 (now expanding into SpaceNK stores across the UK).

Our heartfelt gratitude is offered to Francis and Josephine for their time and the quality of conversation at this latest instalment in our series of industry events. We look forward to seeing you all at our next “Evening With...” event in 2011!
